On the morning of April 24, 2025, an employee of a barbecue restaurant in Bangkok’s Bang Kruai district discovered the owner, Ms. Sarut, had taken her own life in her car in the restaurant’s parking lot.
According to a police investigation, Ms. Sarut was deceived by a high-return investment scheme in a financial scam, leading to a total loss of over 7 million Thai baht. Ultimately, she chose to end her life due to overwhelming debt pressure.
On the morning of the incident, an employee noticed Ms. Sarut’s car parked unusually outside the restaurant. After her family confirmed she was missing, they immediately reported it to the police.
When the police arrived, Ms. Sarut showed no signs of life. A charcoal stove and other items were found at the scene.
Friends and relatives revealed that Ms. Sarut often fed stray cats and dogs in the neighborhood and was known in the community for her kindness, but she had been under long-term mental stress due to financial difficulties.
The investigation revealed that in late 2024, Ms. Sarut came across a “private fund” investment plan that claimed to be government-backed and offered a fixed monthly return of 15%. She not only invested all her savings but also borrowed money from friends and family to invest more, unaware that the platform was a fraudulent trading system.
It wasn’t until the scammers disappeared in March of this year that Ms. Sarut realized she had been deceived. Since then, she was frequently pursued by creditors and had expressed suicidal thoughts to her family on several occasions, but those around her did not notice the warning signs in time.
Such financial scams have become frequent in Southeast Asia in recent years, with criminal groups often using the lure of “low risk, high return” to attract victims.
Experts advise the public to verify the regulatory status of financial institutions through official channels before investing and to avoid unvetted financial plans encountered on social media platforms.
