Beware of Scams Impersonating Law Enforcement: FTC’s Latest Warning and Consumer Prevention Guide
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently issued a consumer alert, urging the public to be wary of a new type of scam where criminals impersonate local law enforcement officers and spoof caller IDs to coerce victims into sending money. In these scams, fraudsters typically pose as sheriffs or deputy sheriffs, claiming to have intercepted a suspicious package addressed to the victim, allegedly containing illegal items such as cash, drugs, or weapons. The victim is then threatened with arrest if they do not immediately pay a supposed “fine.”
To evade legal prosecution, victims are instructed to make payments through various methods, including sending cash, depositing money via a Bitcoin ATM, purchasing gift cards, or transferring funds through popular payment apps like Zelle, Cash App, or Venmo. Scammers can be extremely persuasive in some cases: they may use the names of real law enforcement officers, use technology to spoof legitimate caller ID numbers, and even mention the victim’s personal information, such as their name and address, to enhance their credibility.
The FTC emphasizes that all such actions are fraudulent. Legitimate law enforcement agencies will never threaten arrest over the phone or demand payment, nor will they specify payment methods such as gift cards, cryptocurrency, or digital transfers. If you receive such a call, you should hang up immediately and not call back the number displayed. It is recommended to independently verify the information with the relevant authorities through their official website or a known, trusted contact channel.
In February of this year, the FTC issued a warning about another new type of impersonation scam involving fraudsters falsely claiming to be FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson in an attempt to deceive consumers. According to a report from the agency in March, U.S. consumers lost approximately $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, a 25% increase from 2023, highlighting the growing prevalence of such crimes.
